Seizure-Induced Myocardial Stunning: A Possible Cardiac Link to Sudden Unexpected Death In Epilepsy (SUDEP)
نویسندگان
چکیده
Transient left ventricular dysfunction complicating neurological conditions has been well described. Although most commonly linked to subarachnoid hemorrhage, ‘‘neurogenic stunned myocardium’’ has also been reported to complicate metastatic brain tumors, subdural hematoma, hydrocephalus and ischemic strokes. We report a case of transient cardiomyopathy complicating generalized tonic-clonic seizures.

[Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy: SUDEP].
Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) is the most important direct epilepsy-related cause of death. Patients with refractory epilepsy are at especially high risk of SUDEP. SUDEP occurs predominantly at night and unwitnessed, and can best be regarded as a fatal tonic-clonic seizure. While its pathophysiology is incompletely understood, SUDEP is most probably triggered by a number of predis...

ee front matter & 2007 dip.2007.05.004 7676 2196; fax: +44 20 7 ess: [email protected] Summary There are up to 500 epilepsy-related deaths annually in the UK, many of which are unwitnessed. Likely mechanisms for sudden and unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) are cerebrogenic cardiac arrhythmias, or central respiratory depression occurring during the peri-ictal period. Pathologists should be inf...
متن کاملIs omega-3 fatty acid deficiency a factor contributing to refractory seizures and SUDEP? A hypothesis
Epilepsy, the commonest serious neurological condition, is associated with an increased risk in premature deaths, including an estimated 500 sudden unexpected deaths (SUDEP) per year in the UK. In some patients seizures are associated with cardiac arrhythmias, which are thought to be a major factor in SUDEP. Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to reduce cardiac arrhythmias in animal studies and...
متن کاملSudden unexpected death in epilepsy. Risk factors, possible mechanisms and prevention: a reappraisal.
People with epilepsy are more likely to die prematurely than those without epilepsy. The most common epilepsy-related category of death is sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP), accounting for up to one fifth of epilepsy deaths in some series. SUDEP is more common in populations of people with intractable epilepsy, the annual incidence being as high as one in 200 patient years in these se...
متن کاملSudden unexpected death in epilepsy: is carbamazepine implicated?
Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) has been recognised for centuries. The precise frequency of occurrence is not well defined. Education of medical professionals is needed, so that death certificates and coronial inquests may appropriately, correctly and consistently record SUDEP as the case of death. Correct identification will then allow further investigation of this misunderstood, a...
